In a major step toward strengthening Nigeria’s Basic Education System, the Federal Government has announced that 27 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have accessed a total sum of ₦78.6 billion through the Universal Basic Education (UBE) Matching Grants.

This development, which represents a significant boost to the education sector, was disclosed by the Federal Ministry of Education via its official social media handle on Tuesday 29, July, 2025.

The Ministry revealed that the achievement reflects a 65% increase in grants accessed since January 2025. This progress follows the introduction of the UBEC 2025-2030 strategic blueprint, which prioritizes equity, quality, accountability, and tailored state-specific service delivery, through a revised matching Grant formula.

The recent surge in participation is credited to high-level advocacy and direct engagement between the Federal Ministry of Education, the Universal Basic Education (UBEC), and State Governors. A separate data-driven push also played a key role by encouraging states to release their counterpart funding in time.

According to the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, the achievement is not by chance but a product of deliberate reform efforts and strong collaborative governance.
“This progress isn’t accidental, -the result of focused reforms and collaboration. We commend states stepping up and urge others to act now,” he said.

The Ministry further pledged to maintain a strong focus on accountability and transparency, ensuring that every kobo of the grant delivers measurable impact for Nigerian children.
“We remain razor-focused on ensuring every kobo drives real impact, smart cooperation, transparent reforms, and tangible results for every Nigerian child,” the statement read.
