Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has proclaimed a “small state of emergency” regarding waste management to address the growing challenges of refuse collection and disposal in the city.
This announcement came after the governor’s inspection of the Olusosun dumpsite in Ojota, where he was joined by Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat and Environment and Water Resources Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab. The inspection aimed to pinpoint operational issues and implement immediate, medium, and long-term solutions.

To tackle the backlog, the state plans to increase the daily truck intake at Olusosun from 250–350 to 350–450 by raising the number of active tipping points from two to five. Additional interventions are planned for Solu 3, Iwulepe in Ikorodu, Oke-Osho in Epe, and Erikitte in Badagry.
“We anticipate that within six weeks, we will have four operational dump sites: Olusosun, Solu 3, Iwulepe, and Oke-Osho, with a fifth at Erikitte in Badagry,” Sanwo-Olu explained. “This will improve truck turnaround times on the roads, ensuring they don’t spend 12 hours or an entire day at a single dump site before unloading.”
