Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved the appointment of Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi Badejo as the new Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), succeeding Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, whose five-year tenure is ending.
The appointment was announced on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, by the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso.

Badejo, a Professor of Guidance and Counselling, was born on August 4, 1962. She holds a PhD and a Master of Education degree in Guidance and Counselling from the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
She is listed by LASU as a professor in the Department of Educational Foundations and Counselling Psychology.
Badejo will take over from Olatunji-Bello, who assumed office as LASU’s ninth substantive Vice-Chancellor in September 2021 and is completing a single five-year tenure.

During her tenure, Olatunji-Bello said the university recorded significant developments in academic accreditation, infrastructure, research and innovation, financial sustainability, and staff and student welfare.
She disclosed that 31 of the 37 programmes presented during LASU’s first-year accreditation exercise secured full accreditation, representing a 96 per cent success rate. She also said the university’s internally generated revenue rose from N3 billion to N13 billion during her administration.
LASU’s administration is currently hosting its eighth Research and Innovation Fair, which began on September 8 and is focused on accelerating national development through artificial intelligence-driven research and innovation. The event brings together researchers, academics, students, innovators, policymakers and industry stakeholders.

The leadership transition therefore comes as the university continues to place emphasis on research, innovation, digital transformation, academic quality and institutional development.
LASU, established in 1983 by the Lagos State Government, is one of the state’s major public universities, with its main campus located in Ojo, Lagos. The university’s mandate includes the advancement of learning, academic excellence, research and service to humanity.
Badejo is expected to assume leadership of the university as Olatunji-Bello’s tenure formally comes to an end.
