Islamic cleric, Sheikh Gumi break silence on call for his arrest

In response to calls for his arrest due to his comments on banditry and national security, prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Gumi has characterized his critics as “spineless, irresponsible, and unpatriotic.”

For years, Gumi has taken on the role of mediator between the government and bandit factions, attracting both support and backlash. Detractors have claimed that he is enabling criminals by promoting negotiation over a military response.

In a statement posted on Facebook on Sunday, Gumi defended his discussions with bandits, asserting that he has not violated any laws and that his aim is to achieve peace. He criticized his opponents for politicizing his peace efforts instead of confronting Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.

Gumi recounted a significant intervention he led in January 2021 in Sabon Garin Yadi forest, Kaduna State, where he was accompanied by the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police. He noted that over 600 armed bandits and their leaders participated in this meeting, agreeing to give up their weapons in return for security and essential services.

“The meeting aimed to reduce violence. More than 600 bandits consented to disarm and proposed conditions to the government, none of which were met,” he lamented, voicing disappointment over the government’s failure to adhere to the terms.

He challenged the rationale behind calls for his arrest due to his mediation efforts undertaken for the nation’s benefit while denouncing the hypocrisy of those targeting him personally. He emphasized that free speech is a fundamental right and cautioned that suppressing dialogue will not solve the underlying socioeconomic and security issues driving banditry.

Gumi concluded with a prayer for national unity, urging Nigerians to transcend emotional responses and narratives driven by hatred. “May Allah safeguard our nation from bigotry, obstinacy, and intolerance toward differing perspectives,” he stated.
