At the 2026 Policy Meeting on Admissions to Tertiary Institutions in Abuja, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, indicated that candidates applying for the National Certificate in Education (NCE) who have at least four credit passes will be exempt from taking the UTME.

He emphasized that these candidates must still register with JAMB to allow for proper screening and verification of their credentials before they can receive admission letters through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).

Alausa also noted that the exemption extends to those seeking admission into National Diploma programs in non-technology agricultural and related fields.

According to the minister, this policy aims to increase access to higher education while upholding admission standards. He highlighted that this change should alleviate the pressure associated with the UTME and encourage more individuals to pursue teacher education and agricultural programs, which are vital to national development.

This decision signifies a significant change in Nigeria’s admission process, as the UTME has historically been the primary exam for entry into universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country.
