LASU Queens disqualified from 2025 FISU University World Cup in China

The Lagos State University (LASU) women’s football team, popularly known as the LASU Queens, has been disqualified from the ongoing 2025 Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) University World Cup Football in Dalian, China.

The Nigerian side, who qualified as African champions, were denied accreditation after failing to meet the minimum squad requirements set by the organisers.

FISU’s Regulations Not Met

Under FISU rules, participating universities are expected to present a minimum of 16 registered players and five officials. The LASU Queens, however, arrived in China with only 13 players, leaving them three short of the required number.

This failure to comply meant their dream of showcasing African football excellence at the global stage ended before the tournament even kicked off on September 16.

Group A Without LASU Queens

LASU Queens had been drawn in Group A alongside Shanghai University of Sport (China), University of the Extreme South of Santa Catarina (Brazil), and University of Valencia (Spain). Their absence now leaves the group to continue with three teams.

Group B features Beijing Normal University (China), University of Sydney (Australia), Polytechnic University of Hauts-de-France (France), and Laval Rouge et Or (Canada).

Missed Opportunity for Africa

The LASU Queens earned their ticket to China after defeating the University of Lagos in the final of the 2024 All Africa University Games hosted at the LASU Sports Centre.

Their disqualification, however, has dashed hopes of flying Africa’s flag in the tournament.

The competition is proceeding as planned, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals. The grand finale is scheduled for September 28, 2025, in Dalian.
