Nigeria won’t retaliate economically against South Africa — Akpabio

Nigerian Senate President, Godswill Obot Akpabio, has announced that the country will not resort to economic retaliation against South Africa despite ongoing xenophobic attacks on Nigerians.

He emphasized that “diplomatic engagement would be the most appropriate course,” arguing that targeting businesses economically would not be ideal.

Akpabio rejected a suggestion from Adams Oshiomhole to impose sanctions on companies such as MTN and DStv, deeming the motion procedurally unacceptable.

Nevertheless, the Senate has decided to take action by establishing a joint ad hoc committee with the House of Representatives to address the issue. This committee will undertake a fact-finding and diplomatic mission, interact with the South African Parliament, and formally express Nigeria’s concerns.
