Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chair of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has pledged that evacuation efforts for Nigerians stranded in Iran and Qatar will commence as soon as the airspace is deemed safe for flights.
Dabiri-Erewa’s remarks came after a Nigerian citizen on social media sought help for evacuation from Qatar amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran. She assured that “evacuations will take place once it is safe to fly.”

Previously, she mentioned that Nigerians wishing to leave Iran are currently being escorted through the Armenian border by embassy officials, noting that no Nigerian has been affected by the ongoing conflict.

These evacuation plans follow escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran, sparked by US-Israeli airstrikes on February 28, 2026, which resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, and triggered retaliatory attacks in the region.

Although the Nigerian community in Iran is small, primarily consisting of students and traders, there has been increasing pressure on the government to secure safe exit routes, as regional airspace closures, including those of Qatar and the UAE, have left many Nigerian travelers stranded.
“The Federal Government is closely monitoring the situation and will take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of all Nigerians,” stated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
