Police summon El-Rufai, six others over allegations of incitement in Kaduna

The Kaduna State Police Command has summoned ex-governor Nasir El-Rufai and six senior members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for questioning related to allegations of criminal conspiracy, inciting public disturbance, mischief, and causing serious harm.

This announcement came in a letter dated September 4, 2025, signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (CID) Uzairu Abdullahi. The letter instructed the ADC State Chairman to ensure the seven individuals attend the State Criminal Investigation Department on September 8, following a complaint lodged by unnamed parties.

The individuals named include El-Rufai, Bashir Sa’idu, Jafaru Sani, Ubaidullah Mohammed (also known as “30”), Nasiru Maikano, Aminu Abita, and Ahmed Rufa’i Hussaini (known as “Mikiya”). The police emphasized that the summons is aimed at maintaining law and public order.

This development occurred just hours after police sealed the ADC’s state secretariat in Kaduna, preventing a planned solidarity visit by the party’s North-West leaders to support members injured in a recent violent attack by political thugs.

During a press conference later that day, El-Rufai criticized the police’s actions as unconstitutional. He stated that the meeting was meant to support injured party members, but claimed the police commissioner abruptly canceled it, citing a court order that was neither presented nor formally served.

“He knows his actions violate the Constitution,” El-Rufai stated. “Even if there is a court order, there is a required legal procedure for serving it, which has not been followed. We complied as responsible leaders to avoid conflict, but we will not let this issue go unresolved.”

He pledged to contest the purported court order, warning of a potential legal battle that could escalate to the Supreme Court.

This crackdown further escalates the already tense political atmosphere in Kaduna. Last week, alleged thugs attacked the inauguration of an ADC transition committee, resulting in injuries and property damage, while police present at the event were accused of doing nothing.

In reaction, ADC officials in the state distanced themselves from El-Rufai’s involvement in the disputed inauguration, labeling it as illegitimate and destabilizing.

Simultaneously, the Kaduna State Government accused the former governor of attempting to disrupt peace. In a statement issued on September 1, Commissioner for Internal Security, Dr. Shehu Shuaibu, warned: “Anyone who threatens it, including Nasir El-Rufai or his associates, will face consequences.”
