Soldier allegedly shoots YABATECH student dead during security operation in Lagos

A Nigerian soldier is being accused of fatally shooting Balogun Sultan, a National Diploma II student at Yaba College of Technology, during a security operation in Lagos, leaving his family, friends, and classmates devastated.

Sultan, who was part of the school’s distance learning program, was reportedly on his way home after a regular examination when the incident took place. According to his classmates, he had stayed briefly to submit an assignment for his Research Methods course before heading home.

Reports indicate that Sultan was hit by stray bullets allegedly fired by soldiers sent to address a reported cult conflict near the WAEC bus stop, an area typically bustling with students, traders, and commuters.

Witnesses described scenes of chaos, gunshots, and people fleeing for safety. A video obtained by SaharaReporters showed Sultan covered in blood as bystanders attempted to assist him by pressing cloths against his wounds and praying for his recovery.

He was taken to the Military Hospital in Yaba, where doctors reportedly attempted chest surgery but he unfortunately did not survive.
