President Tinubu stated that these nominations were made in accordance with Section 2(3) of the National Human Rights Commission (Establishment) Act, 2010, which gives the President the authority to form the board with Senate consent.
He emphasized that reshaping the board is essential to enhance the commission’s institutional capabilities so it can more effectively fulfill its role in promoting and safeguarding human rights throughout Nigeria.
After the nomination presentation, the Senate referred the candidates to its Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters for evaluation, requiring a report within two weeks.
If approved, the newly established board is expected to significantly enhance the NHRC’s oversight function, especially amidst ongoing concerns about accountability, justice, and the protection of rights in the national conversation.
