Ali Modu Sheriff, former Governor of Borno State and a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has cast doubt on Peter Obi’s prospects in the 2027 presidential elections, asserting that the former governor of Anambra State will fail to garner Northern support.
In an interview with Channels TV on Monday, July 6, Sheriff expressed indifference towards Obi’s presidential goals, despite Obi’s notable third-place finish in the 2023 election, where he received over six million votes as the Labour Party candidate.

Obi is now pursuing the presidency in 2027 under the newly formed Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). However, Sheriff remains firm in his belief that Obi’s campaign will not succeed, stating that Northern voters will not back him.
“I have no concern for Peter Obi whatsoever because Northerners will never support him,” Sheriff remarked.

When pointed out that Obi received significant votes in states like Nasarawa and Plateau during the previous election, Sheriff dismissed that argument, claiming the circumstances have changed.
“The situation is different now because Peter Obi, during his tenure as governor, drove many Northerners out of Anambra State. Kano residents are telling Kwankwaso that while they once supported him, they will not back him if he partners with Peter Obi,” Sheriff explained.
He further dismissed the chances of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, arguing that the North will not support him either, as it is believed to be the South’s turn to lead the presidency.
