Security agencies can trace cybercriminals, they can also locate Bandits, Ex-Army Chief, Buratai says

In a TVC interview, Buratai stated that he believes authorities have the capabilities to monitor such criminals.

He remarked, “If they can track regular citizens or social media influencers, I find it hard to believe they can’t locate these bandits who show off their loot or engage in various activities.” While he refrained from directly criticizing the security agencies, Buratai suggested that there may be operational factors influencing their actions, stating, “I wouldn’t say it’s a lack of capacity, but perhaps they have their own reasons.”

Buratai called for ongoing capacity enhancement within security agencies through increased recruitment, regular training, and improved personnel welfare. “We need more operatives. More troops and police officers need to be recruited,” he emphasized.

He also pointed out that the military has specialized units, such as the Nigerian Navy’s Special Boat Service and the Nigerian Army’s Special Forces, capable of executing hostage rescue missions.

However, he acknowledged that concerns regarding the safety of hostages and potential collateral damage often impact operational choices during kidnapping incidents.

Additionally, Buratai advocated for the expansion of the National Counter-Terrorism Centre within the Office of the National Security Adviser, suggesting the establishment of state branches with advanced technology and operations centers to enhance coordination and strengthen the fight against terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping nationwide.
