South Africa’s Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture has moved to quell speculation around the hosting of the 2026 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), confirming that Morocco remains the officially designated host of the tournament.
The clarification follows comments made by Deputy Minister Bertha Peace Mabe at the Hollywoodbets Super League Awards, where she indicated that South Africa was ready to step in should the need arise.

In a media release dated Sunday, 1 February 2026, Minister Gayton McKenzie stated that no formal decision has been taken to relocate the tournament and that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has not initiated any alternative hosting process.
“Morocco remains the officially designated host of the 2026 WAFCON,” the Ministry said, adding that CAF’s most recent communications, including the tournament draw held in January 2026, continue to list Morocco as host.
The Ministry explained that South Africa’s discussions with CAF form part of standard contingency planning to ensure the successful delivery of major continental competitions.

“South Africa has expressed its willingness to support CAF if required, should alternative hosting arrangements become necessary,” the statement read.
However, the Ministry emphasized that this willingness does not amount to a confirmation or assumption of hosting responsibilities.
Minister McKenzie outlined several requirements that would need to be met before South Africa could be considered as an alternative host, including: Formal notification from CAF that alternative arrangements are required, approval through relevant Cabinet processes, confirmation of host cities, stadium availability, accommodation, and transport capacity, and finalisation of government guarantees and operational agreements with SAFA and other stakeholders

Until these conditions are fulfilled, no hosting decision can be taken.
